What is the key to achieving meaningful outcomes with all the IS technologies that are being installed at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital? It definitely goes back to understanding what you are trying to achieve, starting with your goals and objectives in mind. The projects we [at PIH] are rolling out and the order in which they get rolled out are fairly complicated. But it always comes back to really understanding what you are trying to achieve, and then measuring it once you are done.
Did you really get what you thought you were going to get for an outcome? A lot of this has to do with the origination of the project: make sure that you have the correct scope; make sure that you have all parties engaged and involved; and make sure that you are actually trying to achieve the right goals, not just having goals but having the right goals. For example, a goal is not to install order entry. A goal is to have better patient outcomes. Just installing CPOE to install CPOE really doesn’t get you anywhere; but understanding the true outcomes that you are trying to achieve --- and being able to measure them in the future is really the most important part of all technology endeavors.
An organization has to correctly prioritize all of their [technology] projects, weigh those priorities against the resources they have and their capacity for change and their capacity to be able to implement these types of technologies. Only focus on the things that are most important to an organization.
